As we collectively move towards trying to remove ourselves from negative stereotypes and racism, Latinos need to work a little harder. Within the Latino community colorism is a huge issue that is shown in multiple ways. It stems from nicknames, teasing, and overall making people with darker skin feel inferior. These ideas have a huge grasp on our culture, especially with our older generations. While they may seem harmless to some, this is a huge problem that needs to be removed from our community. How can we expect others to overlook our skin tones and ethnicity when taking us into consideration for jobs or housing if we are unable to do that within our communities. This also includes making Afro-Latinos feel inferior. Some will make them feel ostracized and not "good" enough to be a Latino but we all must understand that our skin colors should not matter. We are all bonded by our beautiful culture and should respect one another. In order to be better, we need to do better. So if you ever catch yourself thinking negatively based on skin tones, take a moment to thoroughly think about why you would do that and what you could change in order to avoid thinking that way.
