Everyone Deserves Access to Health Care
It is estimated that 59.1 million people had no health insurance at some point during 2010. Unfortunately, the amount of individuals without access to health care has continued to rise over the past decade. Not having access to affordable health care can cause individuals to postpone or even skip routine visits that are often essential to maintaining healthy living.
Recently, Governor Brewer proposed a plan to restore Medicaid coverage to its original pre-approved status as well as expand coverage to more than 63,000 low-income Arizonans. Her plan demonstrates true leadership in the fight against heart disease and stroke which are the #1 and #4 killers of Americans, respectively. The Governor’s plan has the potential to eliminate barriers for the proper diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of chronic diseases like heart disease and stroke.
As a constituent and an Arizonian, I am proud that our Governor is supporting and illustrating the significance of restoring and expanding Medicaid in Arizona. In America, it is estimated that about 59.1 million Americans did not have access to health care at one point during 2010. Additionally, more than half of all bankruptcies in the United States are due to health care costs, which ultimately are then “paid” for by tax payers like you and I. Even more alarming, the number of individuals without access to health care has continued to rise over the past decade with no sign of stopping unless something changes. Not having access to affordable health care can cause individuals to postpone or even skip routine visits that are often essential to maintaining healthy living.
Heart disease and stroke are our nation’s #1 and #4 killers, claiming more than 11,700 people in Arizona every year. If Governor Brewer’s plan is enacted, it has the potential to eliminate barriers for the proper diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart disease and stroke which will decrease the amount of individuals affected by these chronic diseases. Increasing access to health care will lead to decreased incidence of heart disease and stroke as well as lead to decreased spending on health care and increased productivity in the work place.
For the health of Arizonans and the health of our economy, please support Governor Brewer’s plan without delay.
