Cancel culture has been increasingly popular during the past year. But what is Cancel Culture? According to Renee Nakkab of thejustice.org, cancel culture is a form of withholding and withdrawing support for an individual, as well as boycotting their work in social and professional circles. This culture promotes a black and white view of different situations. It sets up a definite moral right and wrong, which can be toxic and hypocritical. The canceled person gets ostracized and publicly shamed for what they did or said in the past or at the present. Cancel culture has affected many great and popular personalities, who had their own values or beliefs. And with Cancel culture digging up some past mistakes, they make it seem like a person cannot change over time. Sure, they might have done something in the past that is now considered offensive, but that doesn't mean they didn't grow as a person. Also, Cancel culture suppresses freedom of speech and restricts people from giving any opposing ideas. The lack of opposing ideas makes it hard to produce new arguments that keep our social ideologies interesting and rich. If this kind of culture continues, it will create a dystopian society that prevents anyone to express their ideas or thoughts pressing them to self-censorship, which in turn kills open discussion of opposing ideas or interests.
