Following yesterday's fire next to Deir el-Salib psychiatric hospital in Byakout (Metn) caused by firework use, a lot of people were put in an unnecessary and easily avoidable risk and had to evacuate.
I know in an ongoing pandemic and economical downfall this cause doesn’t feel important but I'm sick and tired of people’s reckless, selfish and destructive behaviours in this country.

Reasons to ban public use and buying of fireworks:

  1. Major environmental hazards
Fireworks cause extensive air pollution in a short amount of time, leaving metal particles, dangerous toxins, harmful chemicals and smoke in the air for hours and days. Some of the toxins never fully decompose or disintegrate, but rather hang around in the environment, poisoning all they come into contact with. In a fireworks display, those particles that fall to the ground often contain propellant chemicals and colorants, which find their way into the soil and our water systems. Many of the raw materials used to create fireworks are mined from mountains, a destructive process that cuts down forests and destroys wildlife habitats. NOT to mention the potential risk of starting an uncontrolled fire
  2. Yes, it's bad for your health
Exposure to fine particles, like those found in smoke and haze, is linked to negative health implications, such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, asthma attacks and even heart attacks. People at greatest risk for problems are those with heart or lung disease, older adults, people who suffer from anxiety or ptsd, children and pets.
  3. A performative and extravagant display
Honestly fireworks are so wildly used here that we are immune to them. I understand the beauty and drama they bring to a celebration but is it worth the outcome? I think it's safe to say that no one truly cares for a firework display. There’s simply nothing special about them anymore (simple concept of scarcity). It’s just a weird money flex at weddings at this point.
