After watching my brother experience the horror of being diagnosed with melanoma, going through multiple procedures, and following up with treatment every month to care for his cancer, I did not understand why people would voluntarily give themselves cancer by tanning in tanning beds.

I did research to determine the dangers of tanning beds and I found ...

- people who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 75%.

- more than 419,000 cases of skin cancer in the U.S. each year are linked to indoor tanning

- more people develop skin cancer because of indoor tanning than develop lung cancer because of smoking.

- women who have ever tanned indoors are six times more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in their 20s than those who have never tanned indoors

- just one indoor tanning session can increase the risk of melanoma by 20%

Each state has their own rules and regulations which are mainly directed toward individuals under 18. Cancer can occur at any stage of life, why only attempt to protect minors? Abolishing tanning beds and businesses offering indoor tanning is the first step in reducing the number of melanoma cases!
