What the fashion industry is about

Other than all commercial flights and marine transportation combined, the fashion industry is responsible for 10 percent of annual global carbon emissions. At this pace, glasshouse gas emissions from the fashion industry will grow by more than 50 percent by 2030. The fashion industry is one of the largest in the world with a global GDP of $3 trillion. For every 10,000 tons of Econyl war material we use, we can save 70,000 barrels of crude oil and avoid 57,100 tons of CO2 emissions.

According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, clothing production has approximately doubled in the last 15 years, driven by a growing middle-class population across the globe and increased per capita sales in developed economies. An expected 400 percent increase in world GDP by 2050 will mean even greater demand for clothing. This could be an opportunity to do better. One report found that addressing environmental and social problems created by the fashion industry would provide a $192 billion overall benefit to the global economy by 2030. The annual value of clothing discarded prematurely is more than $400 billion.

How to address the issue

Action around the industry confirms the effect of the fast-fashion sector. In order to solve environmental and social issues together, several clothing firms have formed coalitions, which aim to drive progress and reduce the risks of taking on these problems alone.

Some solutions to this, as a fashion company would be:

  • Develop standards and practices for designing garments that can be easily reused or recycled.
  • Invest in the development of new fibres that will lower the environmental effects of production and garment making.
  • Encourage consumers to care for their clothes in low-impact ways.
  • Support the development of mechanical- and chemical-recycling technologies.

What you can do to help

All we're asking of you is to sign this pledge, stating the following:

By signing this pledge, I agree to, for the next 3 months, not purchase new items of clothing (excluding shoes and underwear) and will only thrift or purchase recycled items of clothing.

By signing this pledge you are directly contributing to saving possibly thousands of dollars that would otherwise contribute directly to environmental, social and ethical issues regarding fast fashion.

Thank you (:
