Please sign and support our push to continue the Dual Language Program at Everglades Elementary.  Thank you!

  • This petition began to encourage Principal Tillinger and Everglades staff to continue the Dual Language program for our students. We would like to push to hire a dual language teacher for 4th grade, and eventually, 5th grade. Our students will then have an opportunity to achieve the “Biliteracy Award” (granted at the end of 5th grade).  The intent of the “Biliteracy Award” (BA) is to encourage students to place value on the continued use of two languages.
  • Many of us chose the BCPS Dual Language Program because it offered a school-within-school approach to second language education. Most Weston elementary schools currently participate in the program and many of us chose Everglades Elementary because of their inclusion. The program is successful and thriving in many of the schools. We would like Everglades Elementary to continue its support and extend the program into 4th and 5th grade.
  • Many of our children began the dual language program in kindergarten/1st grade. We were told that once a student entered the program, the student would remain in the program through 5th grade  At the beginning of the 2019/2020 school year, there was confusion about the program continuing beyond 2nd grade.  We are very thankful to Mrs. Coley for taking on a large class and giving our 3rd grade children another year of the program.
  • Falcon Cove and Tequesta Trace, our Weston middle schools, are currently offering the Dual Language Program. Students and parents that committed to the program at Everglades will now be at a disadvantage and possibly unable to continue the program in middle school. The dual language program should be promoted as aggressively as other accelerated/specialty programs.

Please pass on and support us!

*Throughout the world, knowing more than one language is the norm, not the exception.  It is estimated that between half and two-thirds of the world’s population is bilingual.  Knowing more than one language is a skill to be valued and encouraged.  Children who know more than one language have personal, social, cognitive, and economic advantages that continue throughout their life.  The ability to speak, read, and write two or more languages is a great advantage.
