Vie Portland started this petition to Events organisers and

Did you know that over 50% of 5 year olds have put themselves on a restrictive diet? Did you know that a large percentage of 7 to 9 year olds would rather lose a limb or a parent than get fat? Children and young people are surrounded by messages telling them that fat is bad; that they need to have one body type to be considered acceptable. These messages need to change so children and young people grow up with a healthier attitude towards themselves and others.

Children and young people should be able to go to an event without having further messages of needing to diet. Those children and young people do not need to see the reactions of the adults with them when they're approached by a diet company representative.

The diet companies attend family events, often approaching people to hand them their literature. How do those people know that who they are handing the information to doesn't have disordered eating? Or body dysmorphia? How do they know that by handing someone that information, the recipient isn't taking it as a message that they need to lose weight?

I think diet companies should not be allowed to advertise at any family event, at any event that's predominantly aimed at children.

I hope you'll agree and sign and share this petition.
