Let's get united for Iranian journalist Rohollah Zam;

The Iranian journalist, Rouhollah Zam, was executed on December 12, 2020 by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Zam was an anti-government journalist based in France and was kidnapped by regime agents in October 2019 during a business trip in Iraq. Zam who was a refugee in France, had started his journalistic work with Saham News and, at the time of his kidnapping, he was the administrator of the news website Amad News and its Telegram channel, one of the most popular Iranian news outlets. Zam was publishing news and information that, in the absence of freedom of the press, cannot be published in Iran. Zam published information on state corruption and country-wide anti-government protests and echoed the voices of protesters, which made his channel popular among Iranians and alarming for the Islamic Republic’s authorities.

Following his kidnapping, Zam was kept in Evin's solitary confinement for 15 months. For months, he was tortured while denied access to a lawyer and his family. He was denied access to a lawyer of his choice during his trial and was sentenced to death and executed without knowing about the confirmation of his death sentence until his last day. Zam had been forced into self-incriminating confessions. His coerced confessions were aired on national TV and heard across the country with the active collaboration of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

This is neither the first nor will be the last international criminal operation of Islamic Republic.

In recent years, Massoud Molavi and Saeed Karimian in Turkey, Ahmad Neisi and Mohammadreza Kolahi in Netherlands, Iqbal Moradi in Iraq, and Mohammad Ebrahim Safizadeh in Afghanistan are the latest assassinations attributed to Iranian agents.
In recent months, two political activists, Jamshid Sharmahd, resident in Germany, and Habib Chaab (Asyud,) resident of Sweden, have been kidnapped in countries neighboring Iran and are at risk of death and longterm imprisonment.

Just one day after carrying out Zam’s execution, Hassan Rouhani, the Islamic Republic's president said: “I do not think Zam’s executions would impact our relationship with the European Union.”
Rouhani's remark is the consequence of decades of violence and impunity. Europe's silence and lack of reaction means that Rouhani's assessment in that human rights abuses and violations of international human rights commitments do not affect the regime's economic and political relations with the West, and the European Union in particular, is accurate.
The absence of proportionate action endangers the lives of many journalists and activists in exile, and any single one of them could be the next victim of the Islamic Republic's agents.

The United-For-Zam campaign is calling on the European Union and European governments and parliaments to:

1. Demonstrate their determination in countering state terrorism and human rights abuses by making access to Iran and independent investigation of human rights violations by independent human rights monitors a preconditions of any negotiations and treaties with the Islamic Republic. In the event of any negotiations or agreement, the first condition for re-establishing trade relations should be the halt of terrorist operations, kidnapping and harassment of dissidents, human rights defenders, and civil society activists in Iran and outside Iran's borders.
2. Sanction IRIB and its affiliates for their participation in obtaining coerced confessions of prisoners subjected to torture and their responsibility in broadcasting them over four decades, and suspend their permit to operate in European countries.

This petition has been drafted by a number of journalists and human rights defenders inside and outside Iran. We are calling on journalists and human right activists around the world to help this campaign's demand reach European policy makers and parliaments and the world's pubic opionion.
