For many countries, the tourism industry is the most vital and profitable part of their economy. However, unsustainable tourism development can have detrimental effects on the natural environment.

Tourism industry, which requires high energy input, is responsible for extremely high greenhouse gas emissions, and is associated with aquatic chemical and biological pollution, negative impacts on wildlife and biodiversity, physical damages to ecosystems, alteration of the appearance of the ecosystems, and with impacts on the traditional relationship between locals and their natural environment (see Maipas, 2019).

The establishment of National Observatories for the Environmental Impacts of Tourism (NOEITs) is necessary - especially in countries whose economy depends extensively on tourism sector, such as Greece, Italy and Spain - to monitor the environmental quality in tourist natural attractions.

The 4-minutes video entitled “The environmental impacts of tourism” describes both the problem and the proposed action to address it.
