European Parliament: close your door to Assad this Monday
0 have signed. Let’s get to 5,000!
We the undersigned,
On behalf of the parents of the children that have been gassed by Assad's jets this Tuesday morning,
On behalf of the hundreds of thousands killed by the Assad regime since 2011,
On behalf of the besieged cities and towns of Syria, starving under Assad's siege,
On behalf of the thousands of Syrians currently undergoing torture in Assad's detention centres,
On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of disappeared,
On behalf of most of Syria's refugees and displaced,
On behalf of humanity,
1. Urge the European Parliament to prevent the presence of the Assad regime's Deputy Foreign Minister, invited to speak at a conference organised by one of its Member, MEP Javier Couso-Permuy, on Monday April 10
2. Remind the EU of its repeated commitments to fight impunity in Syria, whose regime has committed crimes against humanity on a mass scale since 2011 to this very day
3. Express our full support to the Geneva talks and any attempt to engage in genuine peace talks to end the violence
We remind the Members of the European Parliament that its international image is at stake, and that the internal rules of this institution explicitly allow the European Parliament's President to protect the dignity of the institution. Therefore, a formal invitation to Assad's Deputy Foreign Minister, even by one MEP out of 751, is a dishonour and a disgrace to all of its elected Members.
We believe there is an important difference between inviting the Assad regime's top officials to spread their propaganda unquestioned, and genuinely engaging in peace talks. The Deputy Foreign Minister Ayman Soussan has been explicitly attacking everyone in opposition to Assad, labelling Syria's peaceful opposition voices as "terrorists" in his previous function as Assad's Ambassador to Belgium until he was expelled in 2012, then as Assad's Europe Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Damascus, and currently as Assad's Deputy Foreign Minister. Moreover he was declared persona non grata by Belgium in 2012 following the massacre of Houla in May 2012.
Such a high profile invitation is tantamount to an apology of crimes against humanity and war crimes.
