Van Steenbrugge Advocaten started this petition to European Court for Human Rights

The survivors of sexual abuse by Church clergy are asking for your help. Millions of sexual abuse survivors worldwide found the courage and strength to step forward and ask to hold the Vatican accountable for the fact that they allowed the structural sexual abuse to continue even though they were adequately informed. Also in Belgium, a claim for damages was introduced. However, the Court ruled that they have no jurisdiction to hear the case since the Holy See enjoys immunity. Not only Belgium, but many other countries have in the past protected the Church and neglected the sexual abuse survivors.

The sexual abuse survivors then brought the case before the European Court for Human Rights in the hope to see the immunity of the Holy See lifted and to be granted access to an independent civil court examining the merits of the case. On 12 October 2021, the European Court for Human Rights decided in the case J.C. and others v. Belgium, that the immunity of the Holy See prevails over the right of the sexual abuse survivors to have their case heard by an independent civil court. And so again, the sexual abuse survivors were left out in the cold.

Now they ask for your help.

Since this concerns a serious issue of general importance, the survivors want to bring the case before the Grand Chamber of the European Court for Human Rights and - as a last chance - ask that the immunity of the Holy See is lifted for what concerns the sexual abuse claims.

This is last chance for the many known victims all over the world to get some form of justice. Can we count on your voice to help us convince the European Court for Human Rights to bring the case before the Grand Chamber and put a stop to Vatican immunity?

(P.S.: all donations go to change.org to help raise awareness on this topic and do not benefit the initiative-takers)
