Make City Council meetings accessible to the disabled in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Twenty seven years after passage of the American’s With Disabilities Act our City Council in Eureka Springs, Arkansas is still delaying moving meetings to a venue accessible to the disabled. The room has no access for wheelchairs and the deaf must sit behind aldermen who sit in a circle around a table so that the deaf are unable to see their faces. An attempt was made to give some deaf access by uploading video of the meeting to youtube however the captioning is unedited making it frequently impossible to decipher.
The local ADA Complaint Review Committee recommended that they move immediately into a more accessible location and into a permanent one by year end. The aldermen claim they have been working on the problem for ten years and maybe next year they will move to a different venue. They don’t want to rush anything. Please help us convince them to take immediate action to afford the disabled a place at meetings.
