Meeting with Commerford & Sons Rep
Sep 29, 2015 — I had a call with Gene Cassidy last Friday and a subsequent meeting with a Commerford & Sons rep over the weekend. I expressed my concerns about the animals involvement in the fair and the need for posted information about the animal's care as well as materials to educate fair attendees about the elephant's plight due to diminished habitat and ivory trade. As my sister and I are graphic designers by training, I offered our creatives services to create said material for free. The message I pushed to convey to Mr. Cassidy and the Commerfords is this "If these animals are going to be at the Big E, it should be the responsibility of the fair and the animal owners to educate attendees that these animals are not just present for entertainment but also for our understanding and appreciation". Although I still feel strongly about exotic animals participation in fairs/circuses and I, perhaps, am not totally comfortable with how the Commerford's came to own the elephants, I did leave the meeting feeling confident the Commerford animals are not under duress and seem well cared for by this particular group. I can only hope my thoughts and suggestions were heard and will be seriously considered by Commerford & Sons. If nothing else I hope I have given food for thought to all those who were touched by this petition.
