We, the undersigned Eritreans, are writing the following petition to the attention of:
The Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia
The Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights
The UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Eritrea, and
All other entities that may be alarmed by the concern we express below.
It has come to our attention that in the course of the on-going armed conflict in the northern part of Ethiopia, some Eritreans in Ethiopia have been detained by the Ethiopian Government over the past few days on account of alleged involvement in certain unlawful acts, the veracity of which is yet to be ascertained by impartial and independent courts.
We therefore write to demand the Ethiopian authorities to accord the detainees the right to legal representation by lawyers of their choice, including the right to a speedy, fair and impartial trial.
We also express concern that in the context of the present volatile political situation in Ethiopia, many Eritreans in Ethiopia may be exposed to various forms of human rights violations. It is therefore imperative to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the political crisis of Ethiopia in order to half further violation of the human rights of Eritreans who live in the country (including those of Ethiopians).
