Establish off-leash dog area in Orchard Grove Reserve

Establish off-leash dog area in Orchard Grove Reserve
The issue
I live next to Orchard Grove Reserve in Blackburn South, VIC, throughout our time living here, we have built a strong community through our shared love for our pets. Moving to this wonderful area, we initially knew no one. But thanks to our dogs, we now enjoy a vibrant social life, complete with Christmas gatherings, supportive babysitters, and even help in times of need, like during a child's illness or the passing of family members. The presence of this community has been invaluable to our mental health and daily routine.
The area is currently on-leash, however dozens of families enjoy off-leash time with their dogs in the reserve on a daily basis. I believe this is occurring as the local area is filled with families of all ages who benefit from off-leash areas (elderly who find the pulling of a dog uncomfortable or mums juggling multiple children and a lead) and the alternate off-leash areas are too far to travel with ease.
We believe that designating a specific areawithin Orchard Grove Reserve or Wurundjeri Reserve as an off-leash area at all times (Area A), along with permitting the Orchard Grove School oval to be off-leash after 5 pm (Area B), would vastly improve our community's quality of life. The location is convenient for residents, and there are currently very few off-leash areas nearby to accommodate the growing number of dog owners in our suburb.
Off-leash areas provide an environment that encourages social connections, not only between pets but amongst residents too. They foster community spirit and support networks that are essential for a healthy neighborhood. We see the success of such initiatives in other regions and wish to replicate those benefits here in Blackburn South.
Moreover, numerous studies highlight the benefits of having accessible off-leash spaces. These areas improve the mental and physical health of both dogs and their owners, reduce behavioral issues in pets due to increased exercise, and provide a controlled environment for pet socialization. All well-behaved dogs contribute positively to these environments, ensuring that everyone can enjoy these beautiful reserves.
Lastly, by having a designated area , and a designated time at the oval, it allows for those who are fearful of dogs or who have reactive dogs clear direction as to when and where they would feel most comfortable walking. Which will reduce any unwanted interactions from those who have their dogs off-leash regardless.
Let's come together to advocate for a dedicated off-leash area within our local reserves. Your signature can help transform these spaces into harmonious hubs of connection and joy. Please sign this petition and join us in creating a more inclusive and community-focused Blackburn South.
