Establish Buffer Zones Around the Lincoln Park Pond

Establish Buffer Zones Around the Lincoln Park Pond
Why this petition matters
Lincoln Park Pond is a small pond that serves as aesthetic value while also providing a habitat for animals such as turtles, geese, etc. However, the pond is being degraded due to the lack of buffer zones around the edges of the pond. Buffer zones are areas surrounding the edge of a body of water that separate it from developed areas such as lawns & roads and usually consists of strips of vegetation. Buffer zones help to reduce the amount of runoff that ends up in bodies of water, which can carry litter, soil, & other pollutants and deposit them in the water. Without buffer zones around the Lincoln Park Pond, large quantities runoff enters the pond, polluting the water with litter, fertilizers, toxic metals such as lead, and pesticides. This not only harms wildlife that use the pond, but also degrades its aesthetic value. This problem can easily be solved by planting shrubs, trees, & other vegetation near the edge of the pond and changing mowing practices to allow existing vegetation such as grass to grow along the pond's edge. By implementing these simple solutions, the volume of runoff entering the pond can be reduced, allowing the pond's biodiversity to increase. Moreover, establishing these buffer zones will create habitats for birds & other animals that live in Lincoln Park. Aesthetic value will also be restored to the pond, making it a great place for residents and tourists to enjoy their day.
