As a first-generation American, my parents made the brave decision to escape Czechoslovakia in 1950, refusing to raise a family under the oppressive regime of communism. Their courage and resilience have always been an inspiration for me. Today, as I witness what is happening in the U.S. and globally, I feel compelled to take action against the alarming trend toward authoritarianism.

This petition calls for the establishment of a new "Fairness Doctrine". The original Fairness Doctrine was introduced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1949 with an aim to ensure balanced and fair coverage of controversial public issues on broadcast media. However, it was eliminated in 1987.

Since its removal, we've seen an increase in partisan bias across various media outlets which has contributed significantly towards political polarization (Pew Research Center). This lack of balanced reporting not only undermines our democratic values but also fuels misinformation and division among citizens.

By reinstating a modernized version of this doctrine, we can work towards creating an environment where diverse viewpoints are represented fairly across all forms of media - television, radio and digital platforms alike. This will not only help reduce political polarization but also foster informed civic participation which is crucial for any functioning democracy.
