Essex Tech Student Union started this petition to Essex North Shore Agriculture and Technical School Commitee and Administration

After much observation and deliberation, the Essex Tech Student Union has decided to urge that a better system be put into place for seating at lunch. Since the goal of having randomly assigned seats at lunch is to allow for contact tracing, we believe that this can be achieved in a manner that allows students to be able to have more choice in where they sit. Lunchtime should be a time to eat, decompress, and be with friends. Even in the age of COVID19, we the student union firmly believe that there is a better way to balance safety while also allowing for more student choice in seating. As it is, many students are not sitting in the seats assigned to them at the beginning of the year. The reason for this is simple. Students are against it. While you can have administrators checking to make sure that students are sitting where they are supposed to, it is a massive waste of manpower, and a point of contention that creates bad blood between the student body and school officials. The issue is, this forces students who want to sit with friends to do so behind the schools back. Obviously this makes contact tracing very difficult, which could prove to be a danger. If students had more choice in their lunch seats, more students would buy into the system and as a result, there would be far more compliance keeping everyone safer, and the student body happier. It is for these reasons that we have come up with a few alternative solutions to both keep everyone safe, and able to have choice

Have students sign up for where they want to sit on a weekly, monthly, quarterly or daily basis.
Have students scan a QR code on the desk they sit at or simply report the number seat they were at on a date so that contact tracing can be performed.
We are also very much open to other new methods that would give students more choice in where they sit, and therefore increase students' compliance, making everyone safer.
