It is an Essex tradition to reward seniors hard work by exempting them from finals when they have an 83 or higher.   This year so much has changed.  Not only are we in a pandemic, but our senior year that we have been waiting for forever is being taken before our eyes. On top of that, there is now no reward for our hard work and no opportunity to become exempt from our finals. COVID has effected our mental health and stability as we conquer half online learning, something new to all of us.  Give the seniors something we can appreciate and be excited for, this year has been no walk in the park and yet it feels as if we are being punished.

With the new way of scheduling this year, many of us have our first semester containing our most challenging classes, and our AP's.  Seniors are also still amidst submitting college applications during the week of finals this year.

Though we have many new administrators this year, this is a tradition that should change.  Administration hasn't set out a plan that the teachers have to abide by. Because of this, some teachers are allowing students to be excused, while others are not.  It is not fair that depending on who your teacher is for a certain class decides whether or not you are taking a final. This ritual has happened for many years, and this year should be no exception.  Everyone has watched as seniors from all past years have experienced the privilege of being exempt from their finals. This year has been hard enough on the senior class, and we deserve to be rewarded with being exempt from our finals for the classes in which we are excelling.  If you agree with me I hope you sign this petition and give the senior class something to look forward to after a very difficult last year in high school.
