Save the A.B. Ellis Public School building

The Town of Espanola and the Rainbow Board of Education have agreed on plans to demolish the old A.B. Ellis Public School building and turn it into a parking lot.
The original structure dates from 1919 and is one of the oldest public buildings in town. If we demolish it, we'd lose more than a valuable piece of our heritage; we'd also lose a large, structurally sound, fully accessible building right downtown.
Espanola needs housing, especially accessible housing for seniors. Our talks with people around town have revealed a need for community spaces, meeting spaces, performance spaces, and office spaces. All of these are more important than parking spaces.
Accordingly, we ask that demolition plans be cancelled, and that the school building be converted to other uses more likely to benefit the community.
