The online fancy dress shop Escapade is selling Halloween Costumes such as the "Psychotic Nympho" and "Psycho Nurse Sally" and other costumes making fun of mental illnesses. When asked to comment Escapade said they would continue to sell the costumes as "there are people who are scared of mentally ill people".
As an NHS Psychiatrist I work with people with mental health problems every day. These costumes and Escapade's comments stigmatise mental health problems and contribute to a culture of fear and isolation for vulnerable people. With one in three suffering a mental health problem, we should be making it easier to talk about, not stigmatising it with "scary" costumes.
Please sign this petition to show that you think stigmatising mental health problems in this way is wrong and that you wish the costumes to be removed from Escapade's shops and their online store.
Many retailers have made similar mistakes in the past but thankfully listened to the public and took these kind of costumes off the shelves.
Thank you for signing the petition!
