Ever since the incursion of rampant neoliberalism in Chile and Argentina in the 1970s and 1980s, the Mapuche territory or Wallmapu, located south of the Bio Bio River, has been subjected to immeasurable domination and constant exploitation at the hands of a diverse range of foreign and national economic interests. Megaprojects like hydroelectric dams, mining operations, oil extraction and forestry plantations embody some of the main threats to Mapuche self-determination and autonomy.
In Chile, thanks to the enactment of Law 701 in 1974, three forestry giants stand at the forefront of the exploitation of Mapuche territory Forestal Bosques Arauco, CMPC and Forestal Mininco. Overall, pine and eucalyptus plantations in Chile today amount to more than 2.8 million hectares. For their part, the forefathers of today’s latifundistas were European-born families, who were invited to settle in Mapuche territory during Pinochet’s dictatorship.
Now Millaray the young machi Millaray Huichalaf (A machi is a traditional healer and religious leader in the Mapuche culture of Chile and Argentina) is leading the resistance against the state owned Norwegian company Statkraft.
The message from Millaray Huichalaf and the message from all the Mapuche Communities is chrystal clear.
- We do NOT wish to negotiate
- We want Statkraft out of Mapuche Ancestral lands and Territory
The oppresive constitution written during the dictatorship of Pinochet have been voted against by the Chilean people and there is a democratic process right now of writing the new constiution even, with representants from The Mapuche Communities.
This is a MESSAGE to Statkraft from the Norwegian and Swedish People!
To Stop all it's operations in Mapuche Territory. This message is direct to Norways state minister Erna Solberg who have the power to change any directions of state owned Statkraft but also directly to Statskrafts Vice President; Tron Ringstad, Funding Manager; Stephan Skaane and Head of Investor Relations; Thomas Geiran.
We want you to see we are this many people who support Millaray Huichalafs cause for protecting Wallmapu, the waters of Pilmaiken and the sacred ancestral lands of the Mapuche communities.
Statkraft market themselves as a leading company within hydropower internationally and Europes largest supplier of renewable energy and Swedens fourth biggest energy producer.
Is this the renewable energy that will save the earth at the last minute or is it plain old colonialism and extractivity business benefiting the same narrative.
YOU have the power to stop it! If we get enough signs we can pressure them to stop and save the ancestral lands and holy waters of Pilmaikén.
