The housing crisis in Petaluma is remaking our town into its own “tale of two cities” – one for the wealthy and one for those who are forced to either live in substandard housing jamming as many people as possible into any available dwelling, or find themselves paying far more to rent a home than the mortgage payments of those who own their own homes. Increasingly this applies even to those indivduals/families making six figures.

There are no acceptable and affordable homes for working people, not for the young families and individuals who reflect the diversity of the Bay Area. The very diversity which in combination with its natural beauty, makes the Bay Area a vibrant and desirable place to live. Petaluma’s aging population who face life on a fixed income, also find themselves priced out of the housing market. Another blow to the diversity we all cherish.

Despite the devastating October fires that served to inflame the housing crisis our City Council has yet to take action. If the Council does not act decisively we are likely to look like Sonoma and Healdsburg… thoroughly gentrified communities whose housing is filled by aging persons who were fortunate enough to have owned homes before the housing shortage became acute, and wealthy individuals/families who can afford second homes in towns in which they have no roots. This effectively destroys a sense of community.
