Car pollutants cause immediate and long-term effects on the environment. Car exhausts emit a wide range of gases and solid matter, causing global warming, acid rain, and harming the environment and human health. Engine noise and fuel spills also cause pollution.

By enforcing one day or certain time frame of no driving of a vehicle, we can help add years to our planet's lifetime. This will reduce exhaust emit, acid rain, along with environmental and human health. Think of all the people you see driving every single day. If no one, starting in the state of Indiana, drives for one day that is already a ton of pollution we are saving from being put out into our earth. Try riding a bike, walking, or even just staying home on this one day of the year.

I am from a very small town where pollution never really seemed to ever cross my mind. In later years I moved to the city of Indianapolis, IN. This was very different from my town because of how much is going on in terms of buildings/businesses, lots of people, and especially a ton of traffic. I am a runner and constantly see tons and tons of trash covering the sides of roads everywhere I go. It influenced me to begin picking up trash and start recycling. Being a lover of fashion, I have also gotten started in the thrifting business selling recycled clothes to try to decrease the second largest pollution behind oil which is clothing. Earth day is coming up this month and it got me thinking about all the traffic and how not permitting anyone to drive just one day out of the whole year could really add up and save more time on the earth we are slowly destroying.

My goal is to create a Car Free Day like the one celebrated on September 22, that encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day. Organized events are held in some cities and countries. According to The Washington Post, the event "promotes improvement of mass transit, cycling and walking, and the development of communities where jobs are closer to home and shopping is within walking distance. Studies showed that for short trips in cities, one can reach more quickly using a bicycle rather than a car. The events give motorists and commuters an idea of their locality with fewer cars. I want everyone starting with the state of Indiana to take part in this event in trying to better our planet.
