With a mere few weeks notice, the Dodgers announced that they will be re-opening the Scott Ave Gate for the first time in nearly two decades.  The gate will be used for ingress and egress during ALL 81 HOME GAMES.  The onslaught of traffic and public safety threat that goes along with thousands of cars redirected onto our local roads promises to wreak havoc on our residential community for nearly a quarter of the calendar year.

Every baseball season, residents of the communities surrounding Dodger Stadium are subjected to an onslaught of not only traffic, but trash, harassment, and illicit activities brought on by fans traveling to and from Dodger Stadium.

At tonight's community meeting at Dodger Stadium, residents complained of everything from not being able to access their own homes after work, to fishing used condoms and broken beer bottles out of their lawns, to a local teacher who said she had to shield her very young students from Dodger fans who exposed themselves to, and urinated in front of, the students.  Not only should the city be protecting residents from such behavior, but encouraging traffic (and potentially drunk drivers) to further infiltrate neighborhood roads will only worsen matters (not to mention Scott Ave borders Logan and Gabriella elementary schools, presenting a danger to students, a traffic nightmare for staff and families, and a cloud of exhaust fumes and carcinogens directly into the childrens' playground).

Despite past assurances from The Dodgers that this would never happen, and after nearly two decades of using the Scott Ave Gate ONLY for exit overflow on especially packed games, The Dodgers announced (quietly) three weeks before opening day that they would be reopening the Scott Ave Gate and unleashing THOUSANDS of cars into our residential neighborhood where people walk dogs, children ride bikes, and- like any community- where people generally like to be able to access their own home.  The ability of emergency services to reach residents will be greatly hindered.  This issue is not merely a public nuisance; it poses a clear threat to public safety.

Additionally, parking rates have increased by 50% at Dodger Stadium, and with it comes the increased likelihood that fans will park on our residential streets and walk to games to save money (we have not had time to organize preferential parking, as the Dodgers have dumped this news on us with nearly no notice).

Opening the Scott Ave Gate encourages traffic and congestion at the expense of residents, while discouraging Dodger Fans who might otherwise be inclined to take LA Metro to avoid long waits exiting the stadium.  As of the community meeting, the ONLY plan The Dodgers had in place for alternative modes of transportation was the continued promotion of the already existing Dodger Express from Union Station (they claim to be exploring other options, but nothing concrete is in place with just a week till opening day).

Councilmember O'Farrell, Councilmember Cedillo and Mayor Garcetti: please support the community that has so overwhelmingly supported you. Please help us protect our residential community from becoming a Dodgers parking lot by creating a street blockade on Scott Ave near Elysian Park to prevent fans from accessing local roads and wreaking havoc on our beloved community.
