Halt construction of MTA Maintenance Shed at 6th and Santa Fe that would derail planned art park and perfomance space (Los Angeles)

METRO is threatening to turn the Arts District into a maintenance yard and dumping ground for inappropriate uses.

Metro plans to install a maintenance facility for its Westside Subway Extension in the heart of the Arts District at 590 S. Santa Fe Ave. between Lucky Brand and the Sixth Street Bridge.

Using eminent domain to take a privately owned parcel formerly slated for a great mixed-use project and instead turning it into an uninspired piece of architecture, Metro’s planned project adds absolutely no value to the community.

The design of Metro’s proposed project demonstrates neither respect nor concern for the fact that several feet away, the City of Los Angeles (using our tax dollars) is building the new Sixth Street Bridge with an art park (including a performance space), pedestrian and bicycle river access and a river park. It ignores the critical need for a pedestrian-activated street along Santa Fe Ave.  Most importantly, it contradicts the City’s Master Plan developed with much hard work for the Los Angeles River Revitalization Project.

METRO’S PLANS MUST BE STOPPED AND RETHOUGHT

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION BELOW.

The Arts District is a growing and vibrant community that attracts internationally renowned artists, innovative businesses, and engaged residents.  We cannot, and will not allow to be, ignored.  Those making the real estate transactions for Metro must consult with the community and should be required to include our input!  It is our home and we will have a say in its development.

The signatures below indicate agreement with the Arts District community’s demand that Metro do the following:

 1)    Place on hold Metro construction department bidding process for a maintenance yard

 2)    Study alternatives for the site selection or site planning that will recognize the importance of contributing to the objectives of the community as manifested in numerous planning documents and community sentiment.

Engage the Arts District community in a solution that will provide pride of ownership for Metro while enhancing the quality of life of business and residence in downtown Los Angeles and specifically in the Arts District
