Mayor's Youth Council started this petition to Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti and

Everyone has the right to feel and be equal. People in the LGBTQ+ community can feel forced or unwelcome in bathrooms that do not suit their gender identity. Los Angeles may be one of the most diverse cities in the world, with people from over 140 different countries with various ethnic and gender identities. Everyone in this country has the right to be and feel equal.

While most teens go about their day to day life, some teens are struggling to understand their basic identity. For non-binary, transgender, and identity questioning students, a simple task like using the restroom might not be so easy. Some may believe holding it until after school and avoiding the restrooms is better than getting bullied. They constantly have to decide which restroom to use, even if both options make them uncomfortable. Many can get anxious by making a decision that shouldn’t have to be so hard for students.

By implementing gender-neutral bathrooms, schools will send a message that they don’t just believe in diversity and inclusion, they act upon it. Gender-neutral bathrooms stand for the fact that they are a school that respects and welcomes everyone for who they are and who they choose to be.

If you sign this, you can help prove to the community that gender-neutral bathrooms are a necessity for schools.
