Tonight, during a livestream with Mayor Eric Garcetti, LAPD Chief of Police Michel Moore claimed that George Floyd's death is on the hands of protestors fighting for racial justice.

He later clarified his remarks, but the impact still stands. The man in charge of the police force in America's second-largest city has shown zero respect for the city's black residents. What Chief Moore said was racist, and further undermines what dwindling confidence Angelenos might have had in the officers sworn to protect and serve them. Given the LAPD's tactics during recent protests, it is clear that anti-black bias and racism in the force is a top-down issue, and needs to be rooted out.

Mayor Garcetti, you have proposed allocating 54% of the city's budget for the LAPD. If this is the level of leadership we can expect from that force, we demand:

  • The immediate firing of LAPD Chief Moore
  • The reallocation of that 54% to fund education, healthcare, and housing the 58,936 Angelenos without permanent housing

Black lives matter. Prioritize them over your racist police force. If you do not take swift action to fire Chief Moore, we will be calling for your resignation.
