PETITION FOR A CALL TO ACTION ON SB 20-79
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
WE, THE PEOPLE, hereby DEMAND the Senate and House of Representatives, duly elected by the PEOPLE, to ACT on our interest and not the interest of their respective political parties. We DESERVE a public hearing on Senate Bill 20-79 so our interests are fully and accurately represented instead of protecting their political stronghold.
SB 20-79 seeks to amend CMC § 5103 such that:
CMC § 5103 (a) reads “If a vacancy should arise in any If a vacancy should arise in any office of the mayor, and less than half of the term of the mayor remains, the Governor shall fill the vacancy by appointing a person qualified for the office from the island or islands involved with the advice and consent of the Senate."
Additionally, it seeks to remove CMC § (b) which reads “If no candidate is available, or if no candidates wish to serve as mayor, the Governor shall appoint a person qualified for the office from the island or islands involved.”
SB 20-79 will take away the voting right of the people of Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and the Northern Islands with respect to a vacancy in their respective office of the Mayor. The law in its current form has established who would be Mayor in such cases and we, the people, do not see any inherent need or immediate need to change the law at this time.
