Increase funding for CAPS at IUPUI
Mental health care, for young adults in particular, is a major nationwide issue. While IUPUI has already taken strides to address this problem through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), we still have a long way to go to provide proper health care for our students. The current system is failing; students are not receiving health care in a timely fashion, are unable to afford resources, and are falling through the gaps of the system.
Specifically, we need more professional and diverse staff, expanded hours, better student follow up, and resources that are inexpensive and accessible to IUPUI students. Promoting mental health care education, being understanding of students facing mental illness on top of school, and actively combating societal stigmas on mental health will also help create a safe, welcoming campus environment.
While these adjustments will require more funding, we should be taking the lead on US college campuses and prioritizing mental health for our students and staff. It is essential that we all do our part to build a positive learning environment and help all of our students survive and thrive.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
