Review of Charges to Bulky Items Collection Service

We the undersigned petition Erewash Borough Council to publish data relating to the impacts to budget, residents and the local environment where the matter of charging for collection of Bulky Items from domestic properties across the Borough is concerned, and to look into ways to strike a balance between making budget savings and maintaining a pleasant living environment for the community.

A few years ago, the Council provided a Free Bulky Items collection service from domestic properties, and short of asking for this to be reintroduced in its entirety, we ask that the Council brings about a public consultation on the matter in light of discord amongst residents, relating to an apparent upturn in cases of fly-tipping, and a decrease in resident satisfaction levels.

The Council currently charges a flat-rate of;

- £24 for up to six Bulky Items (bed base, mattress, dining table, wardrobe, sofa, etc)
- £16 for up to three White Goods Items (fridge, washing machine, cooker, tumble dryer, etc)

We appreciate that the Council is under significant budgetary pressures, but these charges appear to be poorly thought through. This flat-rate approach does not benefit many householders, who may only require collection of one or two items. It appears to be a one-size-fits-all approach, which is geared less in consideration of householders and more from a Council perspective.

If Council findings from a review are that efficiency savings of a chargeable service when taking into consideration the cost of clearing up fly-tipping are negligible when compared to the blight of our local areas and countryside in terms of fly-tipping and resident satisfaction, we ask that the reintroduction of a Free Bulky Items service is reintroduced.

In the case that the savings are too great, we ask that the charges are looked at, in terms of either including White Goods in the current Bulky Items rate, or offer a reduced flat-rate for one or two items, to the benefit of householders.
