In simple words I will say that,

"Manual Scavenging is Inhuman practice and it should not be carried out by human being. Also the employment of manual scavengers is prohibited in India since 1993.Manual scavenging is a caste-based occupation, with the vast majority of workers involved being women."

Manual scavenging can be ended very easily by installing Machines/Robots to clean the drainage, sceptic tanks, sewers.#WeWantRobots

  •  The International Labour Organization describes three forms of manual scavenging in India:-

1.)Removal of human excrement from public streets and dry latrines (meaning simple pit latrines without a water seal, but not dry toilets in geneal).
    2.)Cleaning sceptic tanks.
    3.)Cleaning gutters and sewers.

  • In spite of the prohibition and in spite of many laws, manual scavenging still exists in India. Not only it exists but also takes lives of many people engaged in this inhuman work.
  • According to data by the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis( Commission is acting as a Non-Statutory body of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment), since January 2017, 123 workers have died while engaging in acts of manual scavenging.
  • These deaths happen because of very unfortunate reasons :-

1.)Lack of political will-After 70 yrs of independence our Governments have worked in the area of Space and our nation has achieved milestones in Space field. But our nation and our Governments have failed to bring a small machine which will clean the sewers, sceptic tanks, dry toilets.

2.People who are engaged in manual scavenging don't have any other jobs.Hence they do manual scavenging for livelihood and ultimately they end up being affected by some diseases or they die working.

3.)Informally,many contractors employ people for manual scavenging because they are willing to do such inhuman work in less wages.

4.)People engaged in manual scavenging are not provided tools and have to remove the matter with their hands. In some cases equipments are provided but those are not sufficient.

  • So ultimate aim of this petition is to gather huge public support and eradicate manual scavenging and instead bring machines to carry out such inhuman practice. This is a huge task and it requires Government's intervention as well as People's participation.
  • Swacch Bharat Mission also aims at eradication of manual scavenging and hence the Government of India should try to fulfill this aim as soon as possible( http://mohua.gov.in/cms/swachh-bharat-mission.php )
