The goal of this petition is to encourage UNG to eliminate the use and sale of single-use plastics on all UNG campuses. This includes bags, cutlery, cups, bottles, straws, and packaging made from disposable, non-compostable plastics.

Our Solutions:

  1. Remove single-use plastics across campuses, including food and drink vendors.
  2. Introduce the sale of reusable, sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.
  3. At student orientation, provide each student with one reusable bag and cup with lid and straw that they can use anywhere on campus.
  4. Increase the number of water-fountains and introduce cup-washing stations around campus for reusable coffee cups.
  5. Introduce additional recycling centers to make at least one available in each building, including compost bins, removing the need for general waste bins in every classroom.
  6. Increase awareness on campus about the damaging effects of single-use plastic consumption and the more sustainable options.

The Problem:

Single-use plastics are only used once and then destined for life in a landfill. Worldwide only 10% of all disposable plastic is recycled, and due to its durable nature cannot biodegrade. Inevitably plastic ends up in our environment, local water systems, and oceans. It is up to our generation to lead the charge against disposable plastic and ensure we have a habitable place to live in the future.

If you are student, alumni or staff, please use your UNG e-mail address when signing the petition. All other concerned members of the public are also encouraged to sign. Let's work together to be a more sustainable student body and set an example for all other young people and universities!
