Keep Ms. Skalkos as the jewelry and metalsmithing teacher at Barlow!

Pictured right, Leann Skalkos, my mother has been an art teacher at Joel Barlow for 13 years. Her students have won 40+ Gold medals in Metalsmithing and her Jewelry class statewide. Her students then compete at the next level after winning in Connecticut for our outstanding, hand made, sterling silver pieces.
Joel Barlow is letting her go at the end of this year due to Budget cuts because our school simply cannot "afford" to keep her. Many residents cannot afford to pay higher taxes, which means less students in Barlow in the future and even more budget cuts.
She has shaped hundreds of student's lives--from freshmen to seniors, even kids in College that she still keeps in touch with. I find this simply unfair and unbearable that Barlow would get rid of one of the best art teachers, who's class is a one-of-a-kind experience and has shaped and mentored so many young adults. She is so passionate about her job that this class has made hundreds of students throughout the years to be the people they now have become. Why can't we cut something other than the arts and be less descriminative towards the arts overall? They are a necessary aspect in any other high school that has the opportunities for their students to find their own paths, and figure out who they really are. Joel Barlow may not have this in the future... so please sign this petition and maybe we can make a change to Joel Barlow and these "budget cuts" for classes that are so crucial to our High school experience and adolescence.
