Equity for UNC's Housekeepers

Equity for UNC's Housekeepers
Why this petition matters

In a Daily Tar Heel Article published on September, 14th, 2022, housekeepers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill courageously shared their struggle to survive on low salaries. Housekeepers at UNC make between $31,200 and $41,234 annually, according to UNC. According to the DTH, the average rent in Orange County is $1,134 per month, equating to nearly 44% of some of the housekeeper's salaries. Meanwhile, the Chancellor's annual salary is $635,500. This represents a 1441% salary differential between the Chancellor and the highest-paid housekeeper on campus. In addition, daytime parking passes for employees earning below $32,000 cost between $453 and $596 per year. This is unacceptable.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill would cease functioning without its diligent housekeeping staff. Chancellor Guskiewicz, the Board of Trustees, and those who hold positions of power must begin to act on housekeepers' concerns swiftly and with input from the housekeepers themselves.
It's time for administrators at UNC to get out of the office and meet with the housekeeping staff to hear and act on their concerns.
Lux Libertas demands it.
