Thank you for the NEW calendar Stony Brook! We love it! Proud to be a seawolf!

Benefits of this new calendar?

-- one week less of school
-- more reading days during finals (more days to study)
-- more flexibility in scheduling (more opportunity to take classes)
-- no finals on weekends
-- observance of national holidays
-- no favoritism of judeo-christian holidays
-- longer thanksgiving break
-- spring break in march like every other school

Recently Stony Brook University has decided to end it's religious holiday policy in an act of equality. This would removes any observance of Christian or Jewish Holidays from the school calendar. We support this! The NEW calendar allows for more flexibility in class schedules and does not favor any particular religion.

Stony Brook has a wide demographic and it would be unfair to the students to have a calendar that favors a particular group of individuals. This new calendar also changes spring break to the 7th week to alleviate stress for students who may normally return to Stony Brook to start preparing for finals week. The calendar also allows for reading days during finals week and no finals on weekends which the old calendar does not satisfy. We believe that this new calendar is the best for the university and to all students.

We respect the interfaith's freedom to express their religion however to keep the old calendar would ultimately discriminate and favor Judeo-Christian religions.  Many critics also do not understand that accommodations will be made to all students and faculty who wish to observe religious holidays. No tests will be given on religious holidays and those who wish to observe a religious holiday may do so without penalty and an opportunity to make up the work. Also it is wrong to observe only Judeo-christian holidays when there is a great muslim and hindi population that are not given days off for their religious holidays.

The facts are clear and we ask that all students who actually care about this issue to take the time to investigate rather than accuse anyone of "hate crimes" or "political correctness".

We want the new calendar! We want equality!
