Change location of the 2015 EDI conference in Tel Aviv

We, the undersigned, urge the organisers of the 2015 Conference on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion to reconsider their decision to conduct the event in Tel Aviv, Israel. We believe that to do so offers tacit support to the militaristic deployments of the state of Israel in subjugating Palestinian rights to dignity and self-determination.
We recognise that the issue of Israel and Palestine is fraught with historical and political complexity. However, we contend that to participate in any form of interaction with or within Israel, as well as the occupied territories, without due deliberation is to, at best, ignore, and at worst, to dismiss the tremendous social and ethical gravity of the conflict. We believe that it is our principled responsibility as academics and intellectuals, especially as those committed to equality and diversity, to careful consider the implications of our engagements, relational and locational.
We do not believe that the decision to organise EDI in Tel Aviv is without crucial ethical import and can be taken without serious collective thought. We therefore urge the organisers to suspend plans until an organisation-wide discussion is undertaken. Alternately, should the conference proceed as planned, we refuse to participate.
