Richard Comaish started this petition to Equalities and Human Rights Commission and

We, the undersigned, believe that Equalities has been subject to neglect over a long period of austerity, and that this has had serious consequences. It has resulted in a situation in which a political group or groups has, with impunity, tried to hijack it for their own purposes, weaponising it into a McCarthyesque witch-hunt. We believe that this is in itself contrary to the spirit of good equalities practice, and that equalities should never be used in this way.

Further, we believe that ethnic groups, as groups of people, have a group character which can change over time. No group is entitled to a 'blank cheque' or to 'rest on its laurels.' We recognise that some ethnic groups suffer at the hands of others, but that such dynamics change over time. Thus no group can or should claim a monopoly over victimhood, nor weaponise the victimhood of the past into an excuse for aggression. We also recognise that past equalities practice has not always got things right, has sometimes got things badly wrong, and that discussion of the subject needs to take place in a tolerant and inclusive atmosphere, many past mistakes having resulted from a lack of open discussion.
