Epilepsy and Self-Reporting
Epilepsy and Self-Reporting
Why this petition matters

I am the mother of two young children ages 4 and 2. Unfortunately, their father was diagnosed with epilepsy at a very young age and continues to have epilepsy into adulthood. We were in a very long relationship in which I witnessed multiple seizures. Aside from that I have witnessed his unwillingness to conform to doctors orders regarding taking his medication and have first hand knowledge of his tactics regarding taking medication, by manipulating his blood draws by taking excessive medication prior to blood checks to make sure his prescription is at a therapeutic level. So much that it’s been documented to make him sick. He is not honest when asked about his seizures by his treating doctor or maybe he doesn’t remember. The father travels frequently in the DMV.
I was 6 months pregnant with our second child sitting in the back seat of my car with our 2 year old in or around 2020 when he started going into a seizure. I realized this by his non responsive state and he had a very unusual stare and his body convulsed in a way which made him accelerate on a very busy Highway. I unbuckled my seat belt, threw a blanket over our daughter and jumped to the front begging him to stop while screaming his name to hopefully make him snap out of it. I honestly debated on how to crash the vehicle to minimize any injuries to all of us. I somehow managed to navigate the vehicle to the shoulder in a stopped position then had to hold onto him to prevent him from walking into traffic on the highway. It was terrifying. He never drove my car with our children again but continued to drive his vehicle and his families vehicles. I discovered that Maryland, Virginia and D.C., are ALL self reporting states which means he is required to tell motor vehicles he had a recent seizure. He doesn’t know the frequency or how much he has them because he forgets once he comes out of it. If a individual like this continues to manipulate blood work without the doctors being aware and drive then no one is safe. I worry not only for him, our children but anyone else if something should happen.
I’m asking for signatures to require doctors who are qualified in the field to make that determination for the patient and others by notifying the Motor vehicle administrator and stop self reporting. I hope my experience sheds light on this very important topic and changes self reporting for epilepsy.
Thank you.
