We Deserve Clean & Healthy Waterways in Florida

Florida waterways are constantly challenged with high concentrations of red tide which produces toxins.  The toxins are harmful to human health and it kills the marine animals and aquatic plants that live in the water such as in the Indian River Lagoon.

As a 10 year old kid, I continuously hear stories about how great our waterways use to be back in the day.  How they could go out and swim, fish and do such safely.  This is frustrating because now my generation has to worry about how things will be in the future.  We do not have the opportunity to reflect on how great the lagoon and the waterways were.  Our memories will be that of multiple fish kills, the associated stench from high levels of phosphorus, nitrogen and pesticides that come from run off and overuse of these products.

The Indian River Lagoon, the Saint Johns River and the Saint Lucie Rivers are in bad shape due discharges of polluted freshwater from canals and from Lake Okeechobee.

The impacts are debilitating to all especially to those in close proximity to the affected areas.  The impacts paralyze the local economies especially the ones that rely on tourism.  Our food supplies are at risk also.  These issues travel up and down the food chain.

This is a major health hazard that has been lingering for some time.  It will continue to linger beyond my generation if we do not do something now.
While the efforts and additional funding support promised by our officials will make an impact, I feel that we need to do more and that we need to invest more in prevention, regulation, accountability and in clean up efforts.

We all deserve clean water.  We all are responsible for caring for our planet.  This includes being responsible stewards of our resources that we are blessed to have on this planet.

We the undersigned support all of the associated efforts and petitions for action to clean up and to proactively protect our waterways.  We also represent the youth voices, the next generation that does not want to be left with toxic waters or with adverse health ailments directly associated with toxic waterways & contaminants.
Our voice matters.  We respectfully demand action, awareness and more support to protect our waterways so that there will still be a thing called “clean water” in our state and beyond for future generations.
Please hear our voices and help us all mitigate further adverse impacts to our most precious resource.
