Expose the hidden Environmental cost of Social Media
Did you know that data centres, the back bone of social media platforms have a larger carbon impact than the global aviation industry. Just because a social media company isn’t a shop, it doesn’t mean its environmentally friendly.
Have you ever noticed that social media companies are very quiet about their contribution to the global climate crisis. This is because unlike traditional industries their environmental impact is largely based on the use of data centres which most people do not know/care about. But which are just as energy hungry as traditional industries.
The aim of this campaign is to force online companies to be fully transparent about how they impact the environment and what they are doing to try to save our planet.
I was shocked to discover that my own growing addiction to social media was destroying the planet in other ways.
Whilst we wait for the government to take action, why don’t you make one simple change to play your part. On WhatsApp the default is for all photos to be saved to your camera roll, all these photos are saved physically somewhere in the world, which is damaging to the environment. All you need to do is change this in settings to stop photos being saved to your camera roll.
Play your part and sign below for government action.
