WE DEMAND CHANGE!

Clean water is vital to our health, communities, and economy. - EPA

So, if a household doesn’t have clean water, is it a safe home?

Researchers from the University of California at Irvine and Columbia University found that health-related violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act — the federal law that regulates our tap water — are widespread, with “9–45 million people possibly affected during each of the past 34 years.” In 2015 alone, more than 20 million people “relied on community water systems that violated health-based quality standards,” the authors wrote.

Private wells are NOT federally regulated or protected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Act, despite the fact that an estimated 43 million people (15% of the population) in the United States rely on private wells for drinking water (DeSimone, 2009)

There is hope!  We can fix this!  How?

3 ways-

1. Regionalization of Water - more efficient systems and governments keep taxes and fees lower while providing this necessary life force.  Read more here

2. Low-cost alternatives for water purification.  Examples:  MIT filters, Desalination breakthrough, Solar-powered water filter

3. Clean Water Trust Fund -A national trust fund can address needs across the country, not just locally. It can address issues equitably, in particularly the needs of small and rural communities. A trust fund will enable the country to reach water quality goals uniformly instead of focusing issue by issue. Clean water investments ensure that social and environmental objectives are met – and will create jobs across the country. Riverkeeper
