Save Black Road

Thousands of mountain residents North of Highway 17 are at risk of being stuck in their homes if the structurally weakened Black Road fails. Heavy rains have destroyed portions of all other exit routes – Skyline, Bear Creek, and Gist roads will require extensive repair work to fix and may take weeks or months or even years of repairs before they are usable again. If Black Road is lost, thousands of people will be unable to leave their homes for school, work and medical emergencies. Those trapped on the mountain may require costly evacuation. The cost of moving into extended stay hotels in the valley for weeks at a time is a financial hardship for most. Black road has two significant cracks that already reduce the two lane road into one usable lane in sections. The week of rains expected to start on February 15th is going to make the situation even more challenging. This doesn’t just impact mountain residents – those affected work and attend school throughout the entire Silicon Valley region. Despite the excellent weather, on Sunday, February 12th no repair work was done on Black Road to prepare for the oncoming rains due to lack of overtime funding.
We request that the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors authorize emergency overtime and additional funds to the Santa Clara County Roads and Airports Department immediately. Funds are necessary so SCCR&A can quickly deploy all strategies possible to repair the two broken parts of Black Road and keep it open and strong. Please take immediately measure to keep mountain residents safe and able to access their homes.
