Video Games are the Cause of Violent Behavior and Aggression

Have you ever encountered children or teens playing video games? You probably thought nothing of it. Well, these young children might be playing games that contain theft, violence, prostitution, shooting, drugs, and graphic content. Imagine you as a parent seeing your child promoting and playing games with these objectives. Are you going to be the parent who allows their own child to promote violence? My name is Kiley Knapp and I will be discussing the issue addressing video games being the cause of violent behavior and aggression, and how they can affect children physically and mentally.

NORMALIZING VIOLENCE

Nine out of 10 children play video games. That's 64 million kids! Adolescent children are becoming comfortable with the self-perception of violence and inappropriate content while playing video games. Some violent games that are currently popular are Grand Theft Auto, Sniper Elite, Fornite, and Call of Duty. All of these games encompass explicit content. Those who frequently play these games are becoming desensitized by the graphic, cruel and violent nature that usually would impact an individual, who does not play video games. Blood, intense violence, gore, prostitution, and the use of drugs are just a few of the phrases that are utilized by the Entertainment Software Rating Board to describe the content of several violent games. Parents should become more aware of the restrictions and understand why it is important not to allow their child to have access to inappropriate content, especially during such crucial developmental years. Furthermore, numerous war games possess gruesome and disturbing content and enable players to become used to the objective of killing others. Exposure to violence in video games can desensitize people to the reality of life.

HEALTH

There are many vigorous effects involving health when playing extensive amounts of video games. This includes obesity, lower heart rate, depression, aggression, anxiety, and sleep deprivation. “Exposure to violent video games, even E-rated video games, increases aggressive thoughts, increases prosocial behavior, and increases general arousal," said Dr. Greg Snyder, a psychologist at Omaha's Children's Hospital. According to the State of Online Gaming 2020, Video gamers spend an average of six hours playing video games. Gaming is an outcome of obesity in children that are participants in playing video games because they are continuously sitting in front of a screen for hours upon hours a day and not obtaining any form of exercise. Carpal tunnel syndrome is something many gamers develop. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an inflammation of a nerve in the wrist. This syndrome comes from activities that involve repetitive use of muscles and tendons to the point that pain can develop. Overall, there are many harmful effects on health while playing video games.

LONG TERM EFFECTS

Video games can have many long-term effects. One effect is addiction, video games can cause addition as a result of children playing hours on end with little to no other responsibility. Video games can also affect people by damaging relationships, social and isolation, and lack of awareness towards academic responsibilities. "We also found that the amount of time spent playing video games in the past was associated with lower academic grades in college.  said lead author Anderson, of Iowa State University. '' This study shows how video games can not only affect a person metally but also affect their academic performance, which can lead to people not being able to find a good job and eventually lead to them not being able to support themselves.

CALL TO ACTION

I believe that future children will become more successful and less aggressive if they spend less time partaking in playing video games. Parents can protect their children from possible harm from video games by following these simple techniques. Set limits on the quantity of time a child can play games. Motivate participation in sports or school activities in which young children can interact with others in person rather than online. Lastly, analyze the ESRB rating to get a better understanding of what type of content a video game encompasses.
