Ensure that the Dfe/Phs contract (supplies period products to schools) runs permanently.
The Issue
We are a group of sixth form student who are deeply concerned about an issue close to our hearts – Period Poverty. Through our social campaign, 'TalkAboutPeriods', supported by the 'Inspire US' programme from the Talent Foundry, we aim to address this pressing matter.
Currently, we are advocating to make the government's scheme that provides free period products to schools a permanent fixture. The contract with PHS Group Limited is set to end next year, and this leaves us worried about the future availability of these essential products. Moreover, we have found that every school, regardless of its size or needs, receives the same budget for sanitary products, which clearly isn't a fair solution.
In our community of Brent, and beyond, we are also striving to eliminate the stigma around periods. The Department for Education’s Period Product Scheme is crucial for ensuring that students who need these products can access them, allowing them to focus on their education without worry. Although the scheme is now confirmed until July 2025, this isn't enough. We need long-term assurance that no student will have to choose between buying period products and other essentials.
Sign this petition today, to ensure that young women, not just locally, but nationally, have a sense of security and guaranteed access to free period products at schools (which is where they will spend 7 hours a day on average).
