In the school system today, most kids in middle and high school stress out about grades. This has made the school system flawed over time. The average amount of stress for a teenager is 5.8 on a scale of 10, while an average adult's amount of stress is a 5.1. The level at which is deemed to be healthy is a 3.8.

This is why I am petitioning to change the school grading system. A teacher of mine made a very good point. He said "Grades don't matter. What matters in my class isn't grades, but your understanding of the content." This is a very good point made for a couple of reasons. Teachers these days don't grade based on the student's basic understanding of the subject, but how well they do on tests and quizzes. To do well on a quiz, you just have to remember what your teacher said would be covered on the quiz. A quiz isn't a test of skill, but a test of memory.

With this in mind, imagine how hard students, particularly high school students, study for quizzes and tests. They stay up past midnight studying for a quiz that might boost their grade, therefore reducing their amount of sleep gained daily. With the number of hours slept going down, the amount of stress goes up dramatically. Although stress may not have a visible effect on students immediately, it has an impact on their life in the long term. Studies show that students that show symptoms of chronic stress tend to have a higher dropout rate than those who do not.

Another reason for the rising levels of chronic stress is due to low self-esteem. Most students have a boost in self-esteem when they see a good grade on a test or a good grade on an assignment. But for students that may have a bad memory, such as myself, they may not get the sense of satisfaction that others get from good grades. With this being the case, some parents may be hard on their child, leading to even lower self-esteem.
