School safety is a fundamental right of every student. Recently, multiple concerns have been raised regarding the overt focus on issues such as gender equality, fights, and anti-vaping campaigns at the expense of basic security at the Wayne County Schools Career Center in Smithville, Ohio. The school's primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of its students, which necessitates a comprehensive, dedicated focus on enhancing security measures.
The Federal Commission on School Safety Report 2018 highlights the critical role of a safe learning environment for student achievement. Yet, it has been consistently observed that the security issues in our institution have been overshadowed by other matters. It is not that we should dismiss concerns about gender equality or vaping; however, without a secure environment, we risk the wellbeing of our students. The priority should be to establish a secure perimeter to mitigate the risk of violent incidents in school. There also have been complaints of men going into these wide open bathrooms.
We, therefore, urge the Wayne County Schools Career Center administration and the local school board to increase resources for security measures at the school and balance attention paid to other issues. By signing this petition, we demand an immediate review of the security systems and a reassessment of problem prioritization in our school.
