Since 2003, factually accurate, comprehensive sex education is mandated in California. But all over the state – including in the Oakland Unified School Disctrict – kids are not getting the education they need.

The Numbers:

The median age for an unplanned pregnancy is 16.
Oakland teens continue to have one of the highest rates of STDs in the state.
62% of surveyed Oakland Unified high school students reported receiving NO sex education in 2011.
One unplanned pregnancy costs Californians about $23,175
Sex education can cost as little as $25 per student.

Our students are getting too little information, too late, and it is costing our community too much.

We need the Oakland Unified School District Board of Education to enforce the law by providing accurate and comprehensive sex education to 9th graders.
