Enforce BSL in Ontario

In the interest of public safety, in 2005 Ontario enacted, under the Dog Owner Liability Act, a ban on ownership of Pit Bull type dogs, specifically:

(a) Pit Bull Terriers,

(b) Staffordshire Bull Terriers,

(c) American Staffordshire Terriers,

(d) American Pit Bull Terriers,

(e) Any dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to those of dogs referred to in any of clauses (a) to (d); (“pit-bull”)

Unfortunately, the law is not being enforced and these dogs are everywhere, their owners boldly flouting the law.

We respectfully ask that:

1. Law enforcement make an active effort to actually address this criminal behaviour and enforce the law instead of turning a blind eye.

2. Penalties such as large fines and/or an obligation to fulfill many hours of community service are enacted and enforced for people caught breaking the law by owning a banned dog.

3. Any banned dog discovered here is immediately seized from the illegal owner and removed from Ontario.
